The Malvern court where thousands of Tamil-Canadian families played for decades was demolished without notice. We are asking the City of Toronto to provide a dedicated, permanent volleyball space for our community.
For over 30 years this ground was the heartbeat of our community. Through the gang conflicts of the 90s, through waves of new immigrants finding their footing in a new country — this court gave people a place to belong, friendships, and hope.
The city knew we were here. Politicians showed up for our tournaments, our BBQs, our community celebrations. When the city stopped maintaining the ground, we kept it clean ourselves so everyone could enjoy it.
Then one day — without a single notice, without any consultation — it was gone.
This is not the first time. The same thing happened at what is now Ali Abbas Park (formerly McLevin Park).
And here is what makes this even harder to accept:
If the city can find space for pickleball by tearing down a court that served our community for over 30 years, then our politicians can and must find us a dedicated volleyball space in return. We are not asking for much — we are asking for what was already ours.
This space was never just for the Tamil community. It welcomed everyone who loves volleyball, regardless of background or ethnicity. That is what we want to rebuild — for everyone.
We have formally requested a meeting with the City to demand clear, direct answers and real accountability — no more vague promises.
